The Gujarat Grassroots Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN), in collaboration with the Suzuki Innovation center, an initiative of Next Bharat Ventures, organized an immersive village exchange at Shiyavada near Sanand, Gujarat, on 20 August 2026. The programme was part of the Learn in Bharat initiative and brought Japanese corporate professionals and university students together with local communities.
The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to understand rural community systems, local institutions, grassroots innovation and everyday practices in village life.
Exploring Rural Community Systems
As part of the village exchange, the delegation visited several important community institutions and facilities in Shiyavada, including:
- Government School
- Arogya Kendra
- Ayurvedic health cent-re
- Village dairy and milk collection cent-re
- Gram Panchayat
- Village temple
These visits provided participants with an opportunity to observe how essential services and community institutions function at the village level and how local communities participate in maintaining them.
Learning from a Government School
A key part of the Learn in Bharat programme was the visit to the village Government School.
The Japanese participants interacted with school students and took part in a cleanliness awareness and school-cleaning activity. The activity created an opportunity for students to learn through direct interaction and participation rather than through classroom discussion alone.
The Japanese delegation also shared experiences of how citizens and communities in Japan contribute to maintaining clean public spaces. The exchange encouraged students to think about cleanliness not only as an institutional responsibility, but also as a shared responsibility of individuals and communities.
The interaction demonstrated how simple community practices can become an important part of learning and social responsibility.
Interaction with Grassroots Innovators
Another important component of the visit was the interaction with local Grassroots Innovators (GRIs).
The delegation explored grassroots innovations developed to address practical challenges faced by communities. Direct interaction with innovators gave the participants an opportunity to understand how local knowledge, observation and creativity can lead to practical solutions.
The exchange also provided a platform for discussions around community needs, locally developed solutions and grassroots innovation.
An India–Japan Exchange Through Rural Learning
The Learn in Bharat visit brought together participants from different backgrounds and created opportunities for learning through direct community engagement.
For the Japanese delegation, the visit offered insights into rural India, village institutions and grassroots innovation. For the local students and innovators, interaction with Japanese participants created an opportunity to exchange perspectives on cleanliness, community participation and everyday practices.
The experience highlighted how international learning can take place through shared experiences, community interaction and local knowledge.
Connecting Learning, Innovation and Community Participation
The Shiyavada village exchange brought together several themes central to community development: rural learning, cleanliness awareness, grassroots innovation and participation.
The visit also demonstrated the value of creating spaces where young people, innovators and international participants can learn from one another. Through the Learn in Bharat programme, a village setting became a space for cross-cultural exchange and practical learning.
GIAN continues to support platforms that connect grassroots innovators, communities, students and wider networks to encourage learning from local experiences and solutions.
