Anang once helped a blind lady find directions; this incident made him ponder the difficulties visually impaired people face in their daily lives. Visually challenged people face many difficulties walking and navigating due to obstacles. This incident made him study and research the problems faced by blind people. He found out that blind man sticks and smart walking sticks are already available in the market, which can detect obstacles at the ground level to help visually impaired people. Still, nothing in the market can detect obstacles at waist level and above. Anang then developed an intelligent goggle for the blind called G4B.
Anang took inspiration from the navigation mechanism used by bats and integrated the same into a goggle. Bats emit specific frequency ultrasound from their nostrils or mouth and detect obstacles by sensing the echo bounced back from the obstacles. Bats do not use their eyes for navigation. Anang developed intelligent sunglasses which could detect obstacles present ahead of the usually challenged people and give an alert in the form of vibrations. The innovative goggle comprises an ultrasonic transmitter-receiver and a microprocessor. The normal sunglasses are fitted with sensors to alert visually challenged users about the obstacles ahead. Nissan glasses contain vibration alerts on the sides, and as the user moves nearer to the obstruction, the vibrations get stronger. These intelligent sunglasses complement blind man sticks/ smart walking sticks and are not designed to replace them.
The innovation announcement was so impactful that UNICEF expressed interest in refining the prototype to make it market ready. His innovation has won many awards, including Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s ignite awards 2017, the Deena Nath Pandey smart India innovation award 2017, and the national award at the 10th National grassroots innovation award. 2019.
