| Details Of Innovation | Cotton (Gossypium herbarium) is a cash crop frequently infested by sucking pests like aphid, jassid, thrips, whitefly, and ball worms. Aphids and whitefly are almost permanent pests during monsoons and the winter season. They suck the cell sap from the leaves and tender parts of the plant and weaken it. This stunts their growth and finally reduces productivity. To control this pest, one-kilogram leaves of custard apple (Annona squamosa) tree are boiled in 16 L water. The mixture is boiled till it reduces to 4 L only. Allow the solution to cool down and then filter it. The filtrate thus obtained is used as a stock solution for spraying against aphid and whitefly. About 100 g of the concoction is mixed in 10 L water and sprayed on the pest-infested crops. To avoid this pest infestation, repeat the spray at the interval of 8 to 10 days as per the crop's need. The concoction is found to control the insect pest and also works as a growth promotor. This is traditional practice learned from ancestors. |
