Details Of Innovation Harjibhai Bachubhai, a farmer from the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, says that Heliothis larvae feed on leaves of the crops like groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), gram (Cicer arietinum), and pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides). He adds that pesticides alone are not effective in controlling larvae. Therefore, he crushes "vadagaru" and salt, keeps the ingredients soaked in water in an earthen pot for one night, and sprays this on the groundnut crop the next day. This traditional practice controls Heliothis and is in use by many villagers in this area.
