| Details Of Innovation | Farmers of Karnataka prepare herbal pesticides by locally available plants to control pests in crops. They grind seven kilograms of negundo chaste tree (Vitex negundo), shrubby morning glory (Ipomoea fistulosa), and Pongam (Pongamia pinnata) each, with four kilograms of rooster tree (Calotropis Procera) and boil in 20 liters of water for half an hour. The next day, filter the solution. Dilute this solution in 100 liters of water and spray to control pests. Extracts of rooster trees were tested against third instar larvae of the teak skeletonizer (Eutectona machaeralis) in a laboratory to evaluate their antifeedant and insecticidal effects. It was found to be effective and a potent antifeedant. Leaves and the press cake of Pongam improve soil fertility. Dried leaves have been used for repelling insects in stored grains. The press cake has pesticide value when added to the soil, especially against nematodes. Alternatively, boil 200 grams of false black pepper (Embelia Ribes) in two liters of water and filter it the next day. Dilute this solution in 100 liters of water. The diluted solution acts as an effective treatment against insects and viral diseases. False black pepper has been used traditionally to help maintain healthy skin and to support digestive function. Clinical studies have shown that it also has a mild laxative activity and extracts effectively against ascarids. |
