Practice Name:

An Innovative Seed Germination Test

Details

Category Crop Pest & Disease Management
Scout HBN
Ingredients Plough, areca nut sheath, soil, manure, cereals and pulses.
Details Of Innovation The farmers from the border areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu carry out a very innovative test to decide the seeds to be sown in the season. This test is carried out on the day of the festival of Ugadi when they perform the pooja (Worship) of the plow. The festival comes just before the sowing season. The farmers join two plows together. A pocket of areca nut sheath is made by joining them. This pocket is filled with soil and manure. Farmers sow five types of cereals and nine types of pulses in this pocket. After nine days, the pocket is removed, and seed germination is observed. The germinated seeds are selected for sowing in that season.

PAS 2 "Milk can be used during two stages of watermelon gardening. The first application is to soak the seeds in milk to help them germinate faster -- a real plus if you are in colder areas with short summers. Later, milk can also be used to spray mature vines to help prevent powdery mildew, a common watermelon fungal disease." https://www.hunker.com/13426409/how-to-grow-watermelon-from-seed-with-milk
PAS 3 "If you soak the watermelon seeds in milk before planting them, the seeds soften and germinate more quickly than they would if planted directly in the soil. Although you can soak the watermelon seeds in water, the milk adds extra nutrients upon which the sprouting seedlings feed" https://www.gardenguides.com/94621-soak-watermelon-seeds-milk-before-growing.html

Other Community Practices "Cultural practices have been reported to affect quality and phytonutrient content of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai]. Knowing which cultivars perform well under various technologies and production systems, and knowing how these systems affect quality and phytonutrient content is imperative to ensure high quality fruit. Organic production and grafting are two cultural practices that are increasing among watermelon producers. Each of these technologies have the potential to interact with cultivars to influence watermelon quality. This review discusses the effects organic culture, input level, and grafting have on watermelon fruit quality." https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Charles_Webber2/publication/255607969_A_review_of_production_systems_on_watermelon_quality1/links/5525969d0cf295bf160eabdd/A-review-of-production-systems-on-watermelon-quality1.pdf
