During the very cold days of the winter, aphid attack may occur on lucerne (Medicago sativa). Aphids are black coloured, small pests. These can be so effective that if the grass infested by aphids is consumed by animals, they may suffer from stupor. To treat the pest, Karnabhai Patel keeps three to four flowered stems or branches of the crown flower (Calotropis procera) at the watering point in the field. As water flows, it gives out a smell. This suffocates the aphids who fall down from the lucerne plants and die.
