White fly causes immense damage to the leaf and sheaf of Gossypium hirsutum. More damage is caused in the winter. Due to high moisture in the winter, there is every chance of insect-infestation. To control white fly on cotton, Ramanbhai Patel of Rajkot has come out with a major, commonsensical innovation. He takes a two-metre plastic paper-sheet and applies castor (Ricinus communis) oil on its sides. Two persons hold ends of the oily plastic paper on the two sides. They walk through the open lines by the cotton plants. The insects will stick to the paper. When they fly from the cotton leaves and try to sit on the oily paper, they end up sticking to the sticky sheet. Thus, the white fly insects are destroyed. About 50 to 70 per cent of the insects are thus controlled. This practice has direct effect on the insects because as soon as the white fly or other insects get stuck to the paper, they die.
