| Details Of Innovation | Termites frequently attack the winter and summer crop of corn (Zea mays) when it is one month old. As a result, the roots of the corn plants rot. Amaratbhai Zala chops pieces of kharsandi (Guizotica abyssinica) and puts them in the water channel and lets water reach the crop. He recommends 20 to 30 kilograms of kharsandi (Guizotica abyssinica) for each bigha of the crop. He learnt this traditional technique from his father Kalabhai who is no more. Amaratbhai used this technique in 2003. The local farmers at Dhulia Vasana in Kheda district followed him. Their crops, too, were freed of termites. While using this method, Amaratbhai cautions that utmost care be taken because "kharsandi" even when it is diluted by water can damage the eyes. However, the ingredients are handy and the method is economical for protecting the corn crop. |
