| Details Of Innovation | Ganpatbhai Padubhai of Dang district, Gujarat prepares his farmland in a unique way for effective sowing finger millet (Elusine coracana) and "varai" (Panicum sumatrence) crops. As a first step, he tills the land before the arrival of the monsoon. Next, he cuts/collects three bundles of green twigs and stems (with leaves attached) of the following trees : ghatti (Anogeissus latifolia), belliric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), teak (Tectona grandis), arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) and haldu (Adina cordifolia). He collects seven bundles of all the above trees if there are more than 5 kg of seeds for sowing. He then spreads the collected material on the tilled land and allows these to dry under the sunlight. In the last week of June, he puts fire to the already dried material and sows finger millet or "varai" seeds on the second day of the first showers. This method not only gives protection to the crops against various diseases, but encourages good growth and easy uprooting of the plants and discourages growth of the weeds. This is a traditional method, but not all farmers use it. However, some farmers do use this method by burning all sorts of farms waste with partial success.
