| Details Of Innovation | Cassava tuber is the main diet for Kerala people, which looks like sweet potato. In Kerala, rodent infestation is generally more seen in elephant-foot-yam (Amorphophallus campanulatus) and cassava (Manihot esculenta) crop. To prevent rodent damage, many traditional practices are used by local people. One such practice is growing one row of bitter variety of cassava (Manihot esculenta) around the field and sweet variety of cassava inside the field. This practice decreases rodent infestation. Traditional people of "Nayadi" cast of Kerala are involved in rodent catching. They put smoke in the hole of rodents drawing them out. Sometimes, they also use powder of chilli (Capsicum annuum) with smoke. Some farmers also grow cassava with main crop like pineapple. Due to this, rodents are attracted towards the cassava crop fand thus, the main crop is saved. |
