| Details Of Innovation | Need for innovative storage methods for ginger : In Andaman Islands, the settlers after introducing ginger from the mainland, wanted to store it for a longer time. Initially they excavated pits of 8 to 9 feet depth and lined with sand. 15-days shade dried ginger is heaped in the pit for storage. However, scorpions and insects were noticed in the pit. Ginger in the lower layers would be affected by rotting due to anaerobic condition. Innovative storage method : Sri. Mohideen kutti wanted to construct a farmhouse. He decided to construct an underground storage house beneath his proposed farmhouse. Accordingly he has constructed a farmhouse of 20 x 10 using wooden materials. Underneath this farmhouse he has designed a storage house with 6 feet depth. He has provided two windows on either side of the godown. He has constructed a drainage channel in the centre in a sloppy fashion. This facilitates easy drainage of seepage water collected during rainy season. The underground godown is free from scorpions and insects. Ginger can be stored upto 3 or 4 years time without any deterioration of quality. During off-season this ginger fetches good price in the market. |
