After spending about Rs.300,000 and six months of hard and intense labour in 1994, A I Nadakattin, a farmer in Karnataka, could finally design and develop a machine to separate tamarind seeds. He has been using it successfully since then. This machine efficiently removes or separates seeds from the tamarind fruit. In a single day, this machine is capable of performing the work that would in the previous manual method have required 500 persons to perform. It has a system wherein due to the sliding action of the pegs that taper to the end, seeds are thrown out of the tamarind pod. He is of the opinion that the machine can prove to be a boon to the tamarind growers owing to its simple design. He says,"I designed and developed this machine in 1994 and have been using it since then. I have found this machine very effective in separating seeds from the tamarind fruit." The developemnt of this machine cost 6 months of hard and intensive labour and over Rs.300,000. It involved the employment of re-engineering techniques too. The equipment can either be connected to a tractor or an oil engine. The machine has a system whereby the seed is thrown out of the tamarind pod because of the sliding action of the pegs which taper to the end. This machine adopts the de-stoning method and saves a lot of time and labour.
