Philosophy of Nine ES

The ethical fulcrum of Honeybee Network can be captured by Nine E’s (Education, Environment, Equity, Efficiency, Ethics, Excellence, Empathy, Expertise and Enterprise) – the values that are central to the existence of Honey Bee Network. These provide a framework for emerging nomic seeped in mediocrity to get over their inertia and move towards a compassionate, creative, competitive as well as collaborative society.

Honey Bee Network Philosophy

The HBN has given voice, visibility, and velocity to innovations from and for the grassroots since 1988-89. It cross-pollinates creative ideas across communities, ensures the protection of the identity of innovators , feedbacks to them whatever value has been added to local knowledge and shares any income generated through application of their ideas with them in a fair and just manner. It works mainly through volunteers, brings out newsletters in different languages, shares open-source databases on innovations and traditional knowledge, helps organise shodhyatras, and several other activities through SRISTI, GIAN and other sister institutions. It also helped in setting up and sustaining the National Innovation Foundation till 2018. It supports, children students, farmers, artisans, mechanics and householders, women etc. It believes that ‘minds on the margin are not marginal minds’.

The Network tries to

(a) respect, recognize and reward creative people,

(b) add value to the innovations and traditional knowledge with or without blending with modern science and technology,

(c) reinforce conservation ethic,

(d) protect their intellectual property rights,

(e) generate material and non-material incentives for individuals and communities,

(f) embed their values, creativity and knowledge systems in the educational system, policy and governance of the society.

It has helped set up SRISTI(1993), GIAN (1997 in collaboration with Gujarat govt) and National Innovation Foundation (2000 in partnership with the ministry of Finance and DST).
