Prasad’s father used tree trunks to make thread bundles for dying and making different designs. The process involves walking around the tree trunks making an elliptical shape for winding the thread bundle. The traditional method leads to less output with more time consumption. Looking at this, Ram Prasad started designing a machine that could do winding and spinning work at high speed. After working hard for over two months, he designed a prototype that could wind cotton automatically.
The machine is fabricated with a drum over which weft winding works using power from a 0.25 HP electric motor. The innovator fabricated the special component that rotates periodically due to the impulse provided by the flat bars with the help of its cutting edges; this is responsible for feeding the threads in both forward and reverse movement. A uniform thread distribution system is attached to the chain and moves along the length of the drum. The attached lever controls the forward and reverse action of the uniform thread distribution system. A foot pedal-actuated brake system is provided to stop the drum’s rotation. Ram Prasad’s innovation can wind five bundles of yarn within an hour, which otherwise takes two to three days.
The Innovator has successfully sold more than 90 units of the machines. The innovation was appreciated and awarded at the 10th national grassroots innovation and outstanding traditional knowledge awards in 2019
